· The Riverside Heritage Garden Park area is residential red zone land bounded by Medway St, Woodchester Street, Banks Avenue and the Avon River and would be designed to:
· Preserve and highlight the cultural and historic heritage of this Riverside block and to protect specific elements of garden, horticultural and natural heritage (including 373 River Road and the Medway footbridge - currently in storage at Ferrymead Heritage Park).
· Allow part of the land to be used for community gardens and education purposes.
· Manage stormwater runoff and the flooding of Dudley Creek as part of a comprehensive stormwater management plan for the Dudley Creek catchment.
· Enhance the natural values of Dudley Creek and the Avon River adjacent to the site.
· Ensure the Riverside Heritage Garden Park is integrated with the vision for a reserve and river park as expressed in the Charter of Avon-Otakaro Network.
Considerations:
· Actively promoted by the Riverside Heritage Garden Park Incorporated Society.
· The area has a very high density of exotic and indigenous trees and shrubs.
· Preservation of heritage gardens and orchards depends upon the ongoing cooperation and support of CERA and private insurance companies.
· Concept could be extended to other residential red zone sites of high heritage, horticultural and natural value.
