Places of Tranquillity

• Six cultural gardens of beauty and peace for family and community use.

• Created in temporary demolition sites in the CBD then shifted to become part of the

Avon-Otakaro corridor as permanent gardens adjacent or visible to the river and within walking distance of each other (ie 10-15 minutes’ walk).

• The six gardens represent the regions of Africa, Europe and Russia, Latin America,

North & West Asia, South & East Asia and the Pacific.

• This project is in partnership with the city's Maori, Pacific and culturally and linguistically diverse communities to include their traditions, cultures and spiritual beliefs. This ensures that these communities' voices and presence is more visible in the rebuild and recovery of our city.

 

Considerations:

 

• Garden designs have already been prepared by students of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University in consultation with relevant communities, Greening The Rubble and the CDHB.

• The first two gardens: Maori and Pacific Region and Greater South & East Asia are currently under construction at a temporary site in Manchester Street.

• Risk of flooding at permanent sites.
